World Bank Technical Paper No. 239.
Efficient use and effective conservation of available water resources are priorities for policymakers. This paper reviews World Bank strategies for assisting developing countries in the comprehensive management of their water resources. It focuses mainly on the Bank's role in international water affairs and recommends a more proactive approach to promote dialogue, improve databases and analysis, and assist governments to manage their water resources more effectively.
The study suggests that the Bank should strengthen its capacity to respond to requests for assistance in an objective, competent, and effective manner. Sustainable development should be the primary objective for its interventions.
