Protected Area Economics and Policy
Jeffrey A. McNeely
Price: $ 22

This book contains papers presented during a workshop on the economics of protected areas held in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1992. The papers examine how environmental economics can link conservation and sustainable development and contribute to the effective design and management of protected areas. They also address the policy and institutional changes needed to enable these areas to enhance their economic contribution to society.

The papers are grouped into three sections: (1) economic policy and incentives; (2) economic valuation of protected areas; and (3) ecotourism and funding mechanisms. Recommendations drawn from workshop discussions include continuing economic analyses, integrating social analyses in project planning, and harnessing tourism as a tool for conservation.
