Poland's positive economic performance in 1993 is expected to continue in 1994, with a projected 4.5 percent increase in gross domestic product. This increase could go even higher, but policies for sustainable recovery must capitalize on the strengths of recent performance and remedy emerging weaknesses. This study analyzes Poland's recent economic performance and discusses related policy choices that the government may make toward joining the European Union.

The volume is divided into three chapters and focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the economy, public sector reform and decentralization, and ways of stimulating the supply response. The conclusions affirm that sustainability of growth over the medium term will depend on the successful implementation of major reforms in public finances and in the enterprise and banking sectors. Consensus for reform must continue as well. Once these challenges are met, Poland should be a credible candidate for full membership in the European Union in the next decade.
